Money back
by: Brandy

There is hope in getting your money back if you paid by cheque and or cash, you need to go to your bank and ask them to do a return on your cheque and then pray that the other bank with put the money in your account. Your bank will probably put a hold on it but once its there hopefully it won't go anywhere. I received my money back and i had a 20 day hold on it but i have till the end of this week then the hold comes off. So there is hope if you know what to do.

money back
by: MAry

I was supposed to leave for the March break and 2 days before leaving, Gotravel closed his doors. I called 8 times Visa to have my money back and they told me to write a letter to Visa explaining what happen and they will see if they will give me back my money. It took 1 week to have my money back but I had to call everyday to ask them. So be patient and you will have your money.

Don't kid yourself - Go travel south left us stranded in Cancun
by: Anonymous

For information purposes and any advice you can offer. We left Canada on Feb. 18th for a two week holiday. We found out with a note under our door last Thursday that Go travel south had gone under. Not only did we pay for a two week holiday, it turned out that for those of us who were away for two weeks, that there was no plane to take us home, we had to scramble to get back to Canada. We also had to pay for the hotel as we were told that they had not paid for it either and Mexico would not allow us to leave before all had been paid. Needless to say, this holiday that we had paid for in January, (approximately 3,600) has now cost us an additional $2,100. dollars. The go travel rep down in Cancun went far beyond the call of duty. She tried everything to get us back and for us not to have to pay the hotel bill, unfortunately, Flair stated they had no room for those of us that were scheduled to be there for 2 weeks. The hotel did not allow her back in once they found out about all of Go Travel's problems and we were left with a whopping bill. We are presently dealing with our Scotia Bank Gold Visa card but they have told my husband and I that these types of claims are not covered. If anyone, can provide us with details/help to recover the extra costs, it would be most appreciated.

I have written to Go Travel, as per their website, with no reply.

From two vacationer's that had to return early to Montreal instead of Ottawa based on available flights back to Canada. Thank you,

What to do???
by: Kristen

Myself, mu husband and 4 others were due to go to the DR on March 20th. Right now my husband and I are being told that we will have the money in our account on the date of travel (March 20) but that GTS has 120 days to dispute giving back the money. Therefore we can be in limbo up until July! We are so frusterated and do not know what to do. We really want to rebook another trip but what if for some bizarre reason they take the money back????? Oh what a terrible situation! We are also told that another carrier may pick up the trips and honor them??

I know who is responsible for this situation
by: Anonymous

The people responsible for this scam are: Hugh Boyle, and Jason Huntley.
Our money is in their hands. Airflair has some of that money as well, as I have talked to other people who booked their vacation in march, and one couple in April, and they have tickets for travel, which means that the airline was paid.
We should not only try and get our money back, but we should get together and file jointly against them.
These people should be put in jail.

refund from Go Travel South
by: Brandy

just want to let everyone know that there is hope for people getting there money back when it comes to the ones that paid cash or cheque. I paid most of mine by cheque and i went to my bank and the did a request for a return and low and behold the money is now in my account. Thank god i couldn't imagine losing that cash. So go to your bank and tell them that you want them to do a request for a return. As long as it hasn't been too long it is possible to get your money back.Good luck everyone.

Consumer awareness could make such a difference.
People are always looking for the best deal online and have no idea how dangerous a practice this is.

Consumers should find a travel agent to work with. They also will find 'the best deal' for you and also your money will be protected.

TICO, Ontario Government, tour operators, airlines, CITC, IATA et al should work together to run a 'consumer beware' campaign

Same for us just came back a week ago, I thank god this didn't happen to us, if we would of left a week later we would of been right in the middle of all of this. I feel very sorry for all those people that lost alot of money on a trip they were so eager to go on. This was the 2nd trip booked with go travel and we never had any bad experience with them we only had good things to say about them. Honestly it makes it scary now to book online I will probably still do it next year but I will always have that thought in back of my mind. Hope everyone will get there money back.

timing for Go Travel South
by: elaine croft

I just wanted to say how sorry I feel for travellers that booked with GoTravelSouth and not being able to complete their trip. I was fortunate to have my trip to and from Puerto Plata the week prior to them going under. I had travelled with GoTravelDirect for years without problems so when booking with GoTravelSouth I made afew more safety cautions than normal (eg..checked to make sure my credit card would return if something happened etc). Like I said we were fortune to have a wonderful trip to and from and nothing but good things to say about the aircarrier and reps.
Ialways booked on-line for my many many years of travelling without any problems so I think it is an unfair statement to make about booking on-line is risky. Unfortunately alot of companies go under ...they are not the lst nor will they be the last.

refund from Go Travel South
by: Brandy Terrio

I booked with Go Travel South. I paid 700.00 on my credit card in which my company is now working on getting back. I then paid the remainder in Cheque. They cashed the cheque on feb 11th and not even two weeks later they went under. Now i have no way of getting my money back unless someone else can help me. I am out 2027.00. That is a huge amount to be out i have been saving my money for the last year. If i can't go on vacation then i would like to have my money back. I have three children that i am sure i could use the money on. I am so upset and am at a loss for words. I have contacted my bank and the Better Buisness Bureau but still haven't gotten anywhere. I have all my paper work and proof that i have paid but still not sure what is going to happen. If anybody has any suggestions or solutions i would greatly appreciate it. You could email me at brandyvs@hotmail.com. Thanks

Did Hugh Boyle go bankrupt too?
by: Dustin

I was able to book a trip to Punta Cana online the night before GoTravelSouth went under. Fortunately, my credit card was not charged and I have now put a hold on it to prevent the transaction from going through. I rebooked with Sunquest, but in a different hotel for a bit more money.

Unlike some of the other posters on this thread, I really feel for those whose vacations were cancelled and hope they still manage to go somewhere. I was pressed for time and did not research the company. I recognized the name from TV commercials and thought it was reputable. Lesson learned!

Let's all remember the name HUGH BOYLE and avoid doing business with any company he may decide to launch in the future.

by: Anonymous

And where is Hugh Boyle, the owner of Go Travel South, in all this? Is it possible that he's hiding out at his mansion in Bermuda, having a good laugh and avoiding the press, like when Zoom failed? Why doesn't this cowardly fraudster just come forward and admit his contempt for Canadian consumers? He should be held to account for this outrageous predatory behavior?

I think it's a bit ridiculous that everyone is "so sad" - are you kidding me!! Go travel direct (south) and zoom airlines were essentially the same company, zoom went down a year and a half ago, it was only a matter of time before GTD did! after zoom went under, no one should have booked with GTD cuz obviously this would happen again!! they had the same bank account, there's no way there was any money left to keep another business up and running!

I agree with the other comments on here that you should ALWAYS book with a travel agent you know or is referred by someone. We don't charge for booking all inclusive packages for you and you have our service behind you. I am a home based agent and offer personal service to my clients who are family and friends and referrals. I wish people would stay away from these discount travel sites because the lesson learned can be a harsh one for those that lose their money or their hard earned vacation. I feel bad for those people that this happens to but the message has to get out to use a travel agent. We ARE worth it!

Go Travel South Dead again, trip refund

GOTRAVELSOUTH IS DEAD....AGAIN...

We got a call last night and were suppose to leave this morning. Nice March break for our 15 year old....?

We were told to contact our credit card company for a refund, and based on what they told us, we sent them proof ie: ca copy of the gts website front page stating they are out of business, along with a copy of my invoice showing costs, and they told me I should expect a credit on my card within a month or two because the company would not be able to dispute this. We'll hold our fingers crossed, and we are scheduled to still leave today with Sunwing, but unfortunately, it could end up being a very expensive holiday...As they say, life's a b@#$&ch.. but some are worse off than we are!

Know who you are booking with
by: Jp

To all who are now out their trips south, it's very unfortunate. People from Ontario should never have booked in the first place with Go Travel, because they weren't even registered with the Ontario travel industry. If you want peace of mind I would suggest using the services of your local professional travel agency who is registered and who can provide you with plenty of assistance in the entire booking process and will act as your advocate at no additional charge.

Sorry to hear Go Travel South is closing down
by: Anonymous

I am very sorry to hear that Go Travel South has ceased its business effective immediately (most particularly I am sorry for those who have trips booked and now have the hassle of trying to get their money back). We just returned from a trip which we booked through gotravelsouth.com and we found it excellent. The ease of the booking (online), the e-ticketing, the flight, the resort and the gotravelsouth reps in the Dominican were excellent. We had a first class vacation and couldn't have been happier.

The Flair airlines staff were excellent (most particularly their airline hostess Jessica). Flights were on time and everything was made so easy by the gotravel rep once we arrived with the transfers etc.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Punta Cana and would have booked with GoTravelSouth.com next year.
Well - at least Punta Cana is still there even if GoTravel isn't :(

No TICO - Beware
by: Anonymous

Go travel direct was owned by the same people as Zoom Airlines. Zoom went bust and left thousands of people stranded, but GoTravel Direct was still solvent. They eventually closed the company in Ontario and were no longer registered with TICO. They then started up again in Halifax, an unregulated province for travel, but because there offices are in Halifax, TICO can do nothing, even though they were still operating flights from Ottawa.

Beware when booking travel with company's that are not registered in Ontario, BC, or Quebec. If they are registered in any one of these provinces, there are financial requirements, and compensation funds. TICO covers anyone, even non Canadian residents so long as they were registered with TICO.

I booked a a vacation to DR yesterday on gotravelsouth.com - saw this 'going out of business' letter today - and have been told by my credit card company that they can not stop the transaction b/c I authorized it. When it gets posted to my cc I must file a dispute with no guarnantee that I will get my money refunded from either GTS or the cc company.

Has anyone ever dealt with this situation before or have any >hopefully encouraging< information?

Please Never Use Go Travel South!
by: Dave M

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, if you are reading this and considering Go Travel South then save yourself and book with someone else! I just recently lost my ENTIRE vacation through GTS because of an error.

I booked for the 13th of March to Dominican Republic, but they called me on Feb. 10th asking us to fly into Punta Cana, instead of our original Santa Domingo. I made the switch based on their recommendations. They then called me on the 18th of Feb. asking where I was. Apparently, this "change in flights" got things mixed up and they said I booked the the 13th of Feb. not the 13th of March. And, the only thing they could offer was for me to pay $1300 more on top of the money they already have from me. NICE DEAL EH?!?!

I am currently taking them to court! SAVE YOUR MONEY AND TIME, go with someone else!

Outstanding Service from Go Travel South
by: Jeff

The reason for this comment is in regards to the vacation we (my wife, and my 6 1/2 month old daughter) just took through Go Travel South to the Dreams Riviera Cancun resort in Puerto Morelos from Jan/31/10 to Feb/7/10. The start of the trip was seamless, we arrived in Cancun with out a hitch. It was pretty much like any other all inclusive we've been on; the only difference was this was by far the best resort we've ever been to...a true 5 star!! It wasn't until the last day of our trip that our dream vacation turned into our worst nightmare. Our little girl got sick...extreme de-hydration. We were told by the resort doctor to go to the hospital. It was then when we started to panic. The language barrier, leaving the security of the resort in a taxi at midnight, our flight leaving the next afternoon. It was then I called the emergency number on the hand out given to us upon our arrival. I was transferred to Lisa, the onsite agent (unfortunately I cannot remember her last name). Her service was outstanding, from the time we called her to the time we departed, she was there for us 100%.;from translating what the doctors were saying to arranging our transportation through the airport directly onto the plane and for just comforting us with our decisions. She really went the extra mile for us...it is for this reason we will travel with Go Travel South again! If your your looking for peace of mind when you travel... Then I highly recommend Go Travel South!!!

Go Travel South - Beware !!
by: Rob in Ontario

After reading the comment Feb 20, 2010 I almost choked. Do you ever wonder if company representatives ever write fraudulent(untrue) comments on these websites at the request of their employer? Beware of and consider this when reading these comments. If a company like Go Travel South was as polished as this comment dated Feb 20 by the anonymous person (and others) then it would be unlikely to find the horror stories that are floating around GTS. First of all GTS hasn't been around for 4 years as stated. They are a new business located in Nova Scotia because Ontario shut there previous company (Go Travel Direct) down for breaking the rules here. And this nice man Jason that's mentioned is the guy who lied to us & later blamed us for booking the way he had told us to.....and then tried to get a lot of extra money (almost 2 grand) to fix the problem when in actual fact we should have received a group discount....go figure! The E-tickets are sent electronically in a format not printable unless opened in Outlook. They should be sent in PDF so everyone can open & print there tickets without calling back and being hit up for a $50/person fee to remedy the problem or mail the tickets....tell me this isn't a planned money grab by GTS. I could keep going on this, because there is a lot more to this saga to tell. I'll be watching the comments listed on this site & I'll be sure to update it when we get back about how it all ended up. Be careful and keep your eyes open!! Later, Rob. P.S. Just to mention if anyone can't print their tickets try opening the email then click forward (just don't send) and you should be able to print this page at this point. When we called GTS they said nobody else ever has this problem, but was able to offer this solution after realizing they weren't getting $50/person....what a crock !!

I've read some negative comments about GTS and I'd like to say that this has not been my experience at all!! Our family booking has gone totally smooth. Jason was extremely efficient and a pleasure to deal with. We got a great price and I love that we do not have to catch any connecting flights given that we are travelling with kids. I'm confident that our travel experience will be at least status quo. If there are any hiccups, I believe that goes with the travel territory. It's not like your catching the bus to go downtown.

Fully Recommend GoTravel
by: Ean P

I have had the opportunity to book several trips with GoTravel and have nothing but positive things to say about this company. I learned about this company from several of my friends and family who swear by it and say that they will never book with another company. Having booked and taken 4 trips in the last 4 years with GoTravel, I have nothing but good and positive things to say about them and I fully recommend the company to all my friends and family. I was thoroughly impressed with their customer service when booking and had no issues booking whether it was online or with a customer service agent. As well, the travel reps at the resorts are extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and are willing to help out at any chance they can. As I mentioned above, I have taken many trips with this company, and for deciding on the company to book for my honeymoon, it was a no-brainer. The flight was delayed because of bad weather and GoTravel actually gave us food vouchers to use while we were waiting. Prior to traveling with GoTravel, I had taken flights with other companies and airlines and whenever there was a delay, the only thing we received was the famous apology, "I'm sorry sir, but we can't control mother nature". When my wife and I got to the resort, someone from the company must have contacted them and told them that it was our honeymoon because the resort had extra items in our room (champagne, flowers, sign on our door saying "Honeymooners"). I think that this shows GoTravel's personable customer service and extra attention to detail. Last New Years, which was our first anniversary, my wife and I wanted to travel back to Mexico to celebrate. At this time, my wife was 32 weeks pregnant and we were unsure as the policy for women flying when pregnant. After contacting GoTravel with our concern, they were very knowledgeable as to the rules and regulations about flying when pregnant. I was still concerned, even with a doctors note, that we were still going to have issues with my wife being allowed to fly because I have heard of other airlines who don't allow pregnant woman to fly even when they have a doctors note. I believe the customer service rep sensed my concern and within a couple of hours I had the president of GoTravel calling me to confirm that it would not be an issue and that he would make a phone call to the check-in desk to ensure that there were no problems. When we arrived to check-in, the check-in rep was expecting us and had mentioned that she had been notified and for us not to worry. Again, what other company provides this kind of personal attention? To actually have the president of the company call us and the check-in counter, shows that they are a customer first company. In the four years that I have been traveling through GoTravel, I have had zero issues or concerns.

Never had any problems
by: Philippe S.

I read the comments on this site and would like to comment about my experiences with GoTravelDirect and now GoTravelSouth. We have travelled with this company numerous times in the past and have never encountered any problems, rather complete care and they easily resolved any small or large problems. The large problem was not the companies fault but rather a huge snow storm in Canada that prevented our return as scheduled. While other travellers that we talked to after getting back explained that they were forced to sleep on cots in an airport, GTD kept us at the resort down south and supplied free room and all expenses since we were in an all inclusive. So we were grateful to be with GTD rather than other well known travel companies. January 2010, our trip with GoTravelSouth was pleasant as always with this company. I continue to enjoy dealing with this company and save money at the same time. Can't beat that. March Break, we are travelling with them again.

NOT everything is wrong with Go Travel South
by: Diane

I'm happy to report that our trip with GTS went very well. We were at The Club Grand Paradise Bavaro and were upgraded to the Select Section. Great rooms, excellent food and drinks, great animation. The Select area is located in the middle so we were close to The Club, and we took the shuttle to the beach area. It ran every 8-12 minutes, very regular. Flair Airlines was also great, even if we had no movies or tv programs. Friends booked the 4* wild card and were sent to Grand Paradise. They paid around $1800 tx incl. for 2 persons, 1 week. We paid $600$ more when we booked in September. Great vacation, very pleased with GTS and my TA Lyne Davy, who was helpful all the way. The only unpleasant aspect about GPB is the staff at the Club Reception Desk. Not helpful or considerate for their guests.

Our booking was very simple: 6 persons, 3 rooms, cancellation insurance, seats reserved.

We were advised by e-mail about the time and flight number change. We received our e-tickets by e-mail, and I asked to get them by mail because my computer was at the shop for repairs.

I checked the Flair Arlines website for arrivals and departures: http://www.flairair.ca/

I also phoned them 24 and 12 hours before departure

I highly recommend all viewers to use any other company than Go Travel South. Watch These Guys !!!!!!!!! - BE CAREFUL !!!!!!!
by: Rob in Ontario

We just booked a trip for 17 people to Dominican through Go Travel South. We spoke to Jayson at customer service just before closing on Friday, Jan29, 2010. He told us he would waive the $10/person charge when we called on Monday (closed weekends) and also that he would merge the bookings together ensuring we all ended up at the same resort. So as suggested we booked the 17 on-line in 4 separate bookings. Well on Monday the story changed and he denied what he told us and requested another $100/person ($1700) if we wanted to ensure we all went to the same place. I asked to speak to a supervisor and an uneducated sounding, rather rude French girl calling herself Lynn returned my call in a timely manner. She also tried to get a pile of money from me as well, although by now she was down to an additional $1050 instead of $1700 to tie the bookings together. I asked her for a legal address and the name of the president or owner & stated I would be looking into this further. She said to forward any complaints to her which I found quite a joke. I finally got another name for the president/owner (Jayson Huntley-not sure about spelling) and that was the end of the call. My phone rang about 10 minutes later and it was Lynn with a new offer for me....now $100 will ensure we're together when they originally insisted on $1700. As they had me by the "#%^&$" I agreed to pay the $100 to get on with it. Never mind the group discount for groups over 15 as stated on there site....this place is a scam from my experience & they won't give you a cent back once they have it, so beware. It's likely worth the $10 extra to book on the telephone and ideally have the call recorded for your protection. Also make sure that you don't require any revisions(and I mean NO CHANGES) to your booking or expect to get shafted by these crooks. Better still; deal somewhere else even if it's a bit more. That's what I'll be doing next time. I'll update this when I get back....Later, Rob.

BEWARE DONT BOOK GO TRAVEL SOUTH
by: Anonymous

I had a TERRIBLE online booking experience with Go Travel South. Which resulted in being charged 4 times for the same trip. In fact, we missed out on a deal because of their online booking issues. We ended up on the 2nd trip which was $1000 more the following week. After many attempts to get through to their customer service department, we finally spoke to someone who BLAMED US for the whole ordeal. They were unwilling to help out and told us that there wasn't a supervisor to talk to. We were given an email address for the complaints department and over a month later, we still have yet to hear from them. It is unfortunate... I have booked with them when they were Go Travel Direct and had wonderful travel experiences. I've given them opportunity to resolve my complaint and am now sharing my experience with others.

Bad luck with Go Travel
by: Anonymous

Last winter I bought a vacation package from Go Travel Direct. One day before departure I had a stroke and I was hospitalized for ten days. Any proof from hospital or doctor did not stop GTD to retain the $1,500 paid.
This winter, 19 December 2009 , I purchased again a package for three, from Go Travel South, which is the former Go Travel Direct. The agency changed the departure time earlier by 10 hours, along with the flight number. No notification was sent at all, although they had several available phone numbers. December 19 was a Saturday, and GTS/GTD do not work weekends, and they have no voice mail. Consequently, we lost our vacation and about $4,000. They refuse to refund the money because their four-pages fine print says "passangers are responsible for veriying departure times". However, they also changed the flight number. Go Travel Direct was shut down in Ontario by TICO (Travel Industry Council of Ontario), for legal reasons. They changed name to Go Travel South and ran away to a less regulated place, Halifax, N.S. BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS COMPANY! THEY ARE MERCILESS. NEVER AGAIN WITH GO TRAVEL ...

Editor's Note: Travel companies do not refund due to medical reasons. This is what travel insurance is for. Purchasing travel cancellation and travel medical insurance with your trip is strongly advised.

Go travel south / DO NOT BOOK!!
by: Anonymous

Attn Fellow travelers!! DO NOT BOOK GO TRAVEL SOUTH!!! The reason why they closed their ottawa office is that TICO (travel insurance company of Ontario) would not let them operate in ontario, as they lost their insurance. They moved to nova scotia as it has no rulings for tour operators to have insurance to operate. This is the same company as ZOOM airlines, who left thousands stranded this summer. THEY WILL GO BANKRUPT THIS WINTED SO BUYER BEWARE AS YOU WILL HAVE NO PROTECTION WHEN THEY CLOSE!!!

GTD
by: Anonymous

To my knowledge GTD is currently going through an office transition. They have or will be closing their main office in Ottawa to relocate to Halifax. I am not sure if this is the delay in this years product offering or not but I was able to get through to someone and they said that they hoped all would be up and on sale before the end of August. Even with the relocation I believe their plan is to still operate from Ottawa, Halifax and Montreal. I have travelled with them close to 10 times and have always received great service and competitive prices. As long as they are still operating they will be my first choice.

Has Go Travel Direct closed? Up until a couple of weeks ago, their website was posting 'available July 15' I have been successful in talking to a call centre agent, but have received no relevant information. Has anyone heard more detailed info?

What's Up the Go Travel Direct
by: Fly From Canada

From what we know, Go Travel Direct did not have a liscence to fly to London:

OTTAWA ? January 28, 2009 - The Canadian Transportation Agency today issued a formal warning to Go Travel Direct for a violation of section 59 of the Canada Transportation Act. The Act specifies that no person shall sell, cause to be sold or publicly offer for sale in Canada an air service unless the person holds a licence issued in respect of that service.

This warning follows an investigation by the Agency concerning the advertising and possible selling of flights from Canada to London, United Kingdom and Paris, France by Go Travel Direct using Finnair OYJ. If the offence is repeated any time within the next four years, it could result in an Administrative Monetary Penalty of up to $25,000 per violation.

As of today, the Agency has still not received an application from Finnair OYJ or any other airline requesting a licence or charter permit to operate these flights advertised by Go Travel Direct.

Any air carrier contemplating operating charter flights between Canada and another country must satisfy the requirements of the Air Transportation Regulations. First the carrier must hold the necessary licence for that country and then it must obtain a charter permit. Licences state the countries between which the carrier can fly. Any application for a licence or charter permit is subject to the Agency's approval, which is not automatic.

We also see on the TICO site that they are no longer listed as a TICO agent (which is not nessessary for operating). We have not heard more.
