Better booking Direct than with Travelocity

I recently booked through Traveocity.ca and com only to discover that had I booked direct with my choice of hotels I would have obtained the same rates, if not better than that offered by Travelocity and as a direct consequence of booking through Travelocity I found that when the need to cancel arose I was severely penalised for using Travelocity.
