April 3, 2006 - Sunwing Airlines Spreads Its Wings In Canada
Sunwing Airlines of Toronto will launch a "low-cost, high-frills" twice-a-week summer service from Vancouver to London, Ont. and from Vancouver to Halifax, starting on June 23.Sunwing co-owner Stephen Hunter said the fledgling airline will offer a more upscale service that bucks the low-cost, low-frills trend dominating the North American industry.
"As soon as you get on board, you'll be offered a glass of champagne," he said in an interview. "There'll also be a hot towel service, a choice of hot meals, and free wine with dinner [included in the ticket price]. We're a leisure company targeting leisure customers who want a certain kind of service."
The one-way price from Vancouver to London will be $249, excluding taxes, while the Vancouver-to-Halifax service has a one-way cost of $349. Both flights will depart from Vancouver International Airport on Tuesdays and Fridays from June 23 to Sept. 15.
"We're not going to operate the service year-round and be a scheduled airline that competes with WestJet or Air Canada," Hunter said. "We'll operate only when leisure travellers want to fly."
He said Sunwing can offer amenities that other airlines can't because it operates on low margins, flies extremely fuel-efficient aircraft, goes to destinations not frequented by many other airlines, and only flies during peak travel months to get maximum loads on its flights. Hunter said all Sunwing flights are at least 90-per-cent
occupied.
Sunwing Airlines was created in November 2005 when leisure travel specialist Sunwing Vacations wanted to gain more control over the flight products and services it sold to its customers. Most of the flights it sold to sunshine destinations were operated by Skyservice Airlines.
Sunwing will take delivery of its third Boeing 737 800-series aircraft in June. Vancouver will be the only western Canadian market served by the airline this year, but Hunter said Sunwing plans to expand its western Canadian service in 2007.
The airline currently serves Ontario and Atlantic Canada, providing holiday flights to Cuba, Mexico, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Panama and Jamaica.

April 12, 2006 - Travellers can stay connected on Via Rail
Via Rail is launching Wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) access on board its trains, in several stations and in Panorama lounges in the Quebec City-Windsor corridor. The service is now available to all passengers travelling between Montreal and Quebec City and in many VIA 1 class cars between Montreal and Toronto. The service will be available to all VIA 1 and Comfort class passengers by the end of the year. Via is currently offering three types of rate plans: a single-use plan, a full-day plan and a monthly plan.
The single-access plan, valid for 15 minutes, costs $3.99 with each additional minute costing 30 cents. Full-day access, valid for 24 hours, costs $8.95, while frequent travellers can subscribe to a monthly plan at a cost of $46.
April 16, 2006 - Sunwing Vacations Have A Great Plan For Seniors
Sunwing Vacations is offering a special "Worry Free Vacation Security Plan" for travellers over 50. The plan features two components: a travel protection plan and a cancellation policy. The travel protection plan provides travel with full medical coverage up to $1- million with no age limit. As well, there's also coverage on post-departure trip interruption, travel delay and baggage delay and baggage/travel document loss. The cancellation policy allows any passenger to cancel their trip up to three hours before departure for any reason. Travellers will be given a financial refund and travel vouchers (amount of each depending on the date of cancellation), and allowed to rebook within the year at no extra cost.
Rates for Sunwing's "Worry Free Vacation Security Plan" range from $59 to $129, depending on the length of stay, with coverage for a traditional seven-night holiday costing $99 p.p.
