April 20, 2005 - California Vacations - What You Haven’t Seen
It is understandable why California attracts a lot of people. There it is warm and sunny most part of the year, Los Angeles is full of movie stars, rollerblading babes can be found all over the place in Venice Beach. Even if it is exaggerated, this part of the California mystique is real and not very hard to find. But California has other things too, that are not scripted, sanitized, and broadcast to the mesmerized masses of the world. The glitter and glamour are only the surface of an incredibly diverse state that would be a productive and powerful nation in the event of ever getting separated from the Union. California has it all: redwood forests, an incredibly verdant Central Valley, the Sierra Nevada, deserts, a lot of well-known cities, and hundreds of miles of beautiful coastline.
Despite the crime, pollution, traffic, and earthquakes, which have made California famous as well, people here are still the golden children of the United States, America's spoiled rich kid that is either loved or loathed by everyone. (In Oregon, for example, they sell lots of license-plate rims stating "I hate California.") To be perfectly sincere, people here don’t really care. Californians are aware of the fact that they live in one of the most interesting places in the world, and they're proud of their state. Nobody can guarantee you that you'll meet Arnold Schwarzenegger or learn how to surf here, but with a little time, a little money, and an adventurous spirit, you will be guided by us and offered one of the most fulfilling vacations of your life. The four of us do nothing but travel, but we chose to live in California because this place has so much to offer.

April 23, 2005 - How to Get Better Rates When Parking at the Airport
Parking fees at the airport can really add up especially when parking for a week or more at a major airport such as Toronto. Here are some tips on how to get a cheaper rate.1) Check with the airport directly to see if they offer any discounts. Some airports offer better rates for longer term parking and for parking in designated areas (usually the farther from the terminal the cheaper). Some also offer discounts for seniors or handicapped drivers (ID is usually required).
2) ParkN' Fly and other off site parking lots. If this option is available to you, it is almost always a less expensive option. It has been my experience that the shuttles run quite often and it is not much of an inconvenience to park farther away. Just make sure to factor in some extra time for your departure.
3) Stop-over hotels. If you have to drive to another city or have an early morning flight, staying over at an Airport hotel may be a good option for you. Check the rates, some hotels include 1 weeks parking in the price and have free shuttles to the airport. Compare how much it would cost to park at the airport, the price of the room and airport parking may work out to be almost the same, might as well stay over!
4) Don't bring your car! Look into other options to get to the airport. Can a family member, neighbour or friend give you a ride? Can you take public transit? Would a taxi ride be cheaper? Do you know anyone who lives close to the airport where you could leave your car?
Check out these options for airport parking and find the one that best fits your needs and use that money you just saved and buy yourself a nice souvenir.
